Structure

Honours, master's preliminary and postgraduate diplomas follow a similar format. The course takes one year full-time or two years part time.

Honours:

  • four seminars (50 per cent of final mark)
  • thesis and thesis writing seminar (50 per cent).

Eligibility

Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences

  • completion of a pass degree in the past seven years

  • half of the pass degree points (usually 72 points) at 65 per cent and above

  • Anthropology and Sociology 1101 and 1102 and six upper level units listed from the approved units for an Anthropology and Sociology major

  • the approval of the discipline group(s) and the Faculty (part-time and mid-year enrolments are allowed).

Faculty of Life and Physical Sciences

  • completion of a pass degree
  • minimum of 65 per cent in the third-year major
  • Anthropology and Sociology 1101 and 1102 and six upper level units listed from the approved units for an Anthropology and Sociology major

Joint and cognate honours

You can take joint honours:

  • The program has to be approved by both discipline groups and the Faculty.
  • You must have completed at least of 18 points from each discipline.

Students wishing to undertake a smaller amount of study in a second discipline during their honours year may be eligible for a cognate honours program.

If you do not meet the standard requirements you may apply for admission to honours, but will need to make a special case.

Enrolling

After enrolment

Once you have enroled:

  • You should start thinking about your thesis topic.
  • The honours coordinator will invite you to a meeting the week before semester begins.
  • A thesis guideline will be made available in the first meeting.
  • In the first week of semester you must provide a few sentences about your thesis topic so that you can be allocated a supervisor.
  • Familiarise yourself with the semester timetable and develop a plan for your honours semesters.
